Kovalosky’s exhibition is in conjunction with the Slate Valley Museum Holiday Festival which takes place on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 4pm-8pm. The festival’s 2024 theme is “Peace on Earth” featuring holiday displays by the local community and an opportunity to create friendship bracelets as gifts for area senior centers and hospital patients. Visitors can walk down to Veteran’s Park for the annual Lighting of the Christmas Tree at 5:30pm.

On Sunday, Dec. 8, Serena Kovalosky will be at the museum from 10am-4pm for a daytime reception for the exhibition, featuring coffee, hot chocolate and cookies.

The exhibition will continue through December 15, open 10am-4pm daily.

Moving Mountains: The Mustard Seed Project is the culmination of Serena Kovalosky’s six-month journey placing tiny mustard seeds from around the world, one by one, on the branches of a foraged mustard “tree” as a contemplative exercise on how “impossible” goals are achieved – one tiny step (seed) at a time. The project explores the symbolism of the mustard seed for restoring faith in our ability as individuals and communities to achieve humanity’s dream of peaceful coexistence.

Throughout the year, Kovalosky invited the public to experience a parallel creative process through the co-creation of an installation symbolizing the immigrant roots of the region by exploring the Seed Journeys of each ethnic group’s food and the history behind cultural appropriation of produce.
